The Kent M. Beeson of Western Civilization
Currently a catalog of VHS movies I'm transferring to DVD and CDs I'm ripping into digital files, accompanied by snarky, ill-informed commentary on same.
YAZ, “SITUATION/STATE FARM”
Forgot I had this, even though I used to spin this several times a week in college. Hate to admit that I really don’t know anything else by Yaz, having never bought “Upstairs at Eric’s” (although I’m totally familiar with both Ms. Moyet and Erasure). In fact, these are all edits and remixes, so I have a feeling I wouldn’t even like the originals.
The other reason to bring this up (other than this is an awesome extended single) is…, well, you’ve heard of YAZ birth control, right? If you’re like me, you’ve seen their commercials a million times in the past year, the ones that use Scandal’s “Goodbye to You” and a Disneyfied “We’re Not Gonna Take It”. Can’t help but think an opportunity was squandered. I mean, it pretty much writes itself:
(Music starts: Doo-doo dooo, doodoo doo, doo-doo dooo, doodoo doo….)
“YAZ is the only is the only birth control pill that’s also approved by the FDA to treat emotional and physical symptoms of Premenstrual Dysmorphic Disorder. But that’s not all!
“Heavy periods?” (Move out! — don’t mess around!)
“Acne?” (Move out! — you bring me down!)
“Risk of ovarian cancer?” (Don’t make a sound just move out!)
YAZ: Go Beyond Birth Control!
(Alison Moyet laugh)
[I’d try to figure out how to use “State Farm” for State Farm, but that’s beyond my abilities.]
[EDIT: Of course, “Don’t it make you feel good” would make a perfectly cromulent tagline for just about any business, but yeah, insurance, definitely.]
